Although most of my blogs are written in Thai but I think it’d be more beneficial to anyone by blogging it in English. At least, I wish it may help you guys find your way out. I expect that many users may have the same problem but can’t figure how to fix it. Some of them might just ignore. But I could tell that is not a good idea. Having multiple versions of Adobe Reader in the same machine may cause unpredicted problems in the future like one of my users had before. Adobe said it in its website so. Before go any further, one thing you should know upfront; I won’t take any responsibilities on any problems probably caused by following my instruction below. Please try it at your own risk.

One more thing, if you tried my below methods but doesn’t work some how. Please kindly inform and suggest your successful methods in the reply below. It may help others as well. Thank you so much.

Case Background:

I found this same Adobe Reader 9 uninstallation problem twice in different computers. Both two are Dell Optiplex machines loaded with Windows 7 Professional 64bit. When these two came to my hand, they had Reader 9 installed. Then, I updated it to be Reader X and expected that it would automatically remove Reader 9 as usual, but it didn’t. Since I had no time, I didn’t try to uninstall it and let they be that way. However, both users then requested me to install Acrobat Profession 9 at the computer setup time. And one of them have them started to have problem after update Adobe Acrobat Profession 9 patches using Adobe Updater.

Info in brief :

  • MS Windows 7 Professional 64 bit,
  • Adobe Reader X (set as default for PDF file open) + Adobe Reader 9 + Adobe Acrobat Pro 9

Problem :

  • Can’t uninstall Adobe Reader 9 as no uninstaller listed in “Programs and Features”

  • One of these machines got PDF opening problem with after update Adobe Acrobat Professional 9 via Adobe Updater.

The Solution:

  1. Uninstall Reader X
  2. Reinstall Reader 9 (better to use an installer of the same version of Reader you are using)
  3. Uninstall Reader 9
  4. Install Reader X

Where to get Reader 9 Installer.

  1. Find it in “C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 9.0\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-……..”. Looking for file “Adobe_Rdr_9_en_US.exe” or something similar.
  2. Download from Adobe Website:
  3. Download from Adobe FTP :

  3. Microsoft Uninstaller Utility (3rd party site) :
  4. Adobe Readers GUID/ClassID (v.2-9.4):

Adobe Reader ClassID for msiexec command & installer folder name

9.1.x = AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A91000000001
9.2.x = AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A92000000001
9.3.x = AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A93000000001
9.4.x = AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A94000000001

My Note : Trials & Errors

I did try this one after one

  1. No “Adobe Reader 9” listed in “Programs and Features”. It means that you cannot uninstall this application from here
  2. Tried to use command msiexec /x {AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A94000000001} /qn in Command Prompt (cmd.exe)
    This command is tried to uninstall application by using ClassID which was specified for Reader 9. Unfortunately, it didn’t work
  3. Uninstall Reader X as expected that there would be Reader 9 uninstaller appear in “Programs and Features”. But It didn’t. So I installed Reader 10 back.
  4. Tried to run Reader 9 Installer “Adobe_Rdr_9_en_US.exe” to check if the uninstallation option is available or not. It failed to run because the installer detect that Adobe X is installed.
  5. So, I uninstalled Reader X. After success, I run Reader 9 installer. This time it couldn’t detect that there had been Reader 9 already installed. So, I let the installer did its installation. Reader 9 successfully installed. This time there was Reader 9 uninstaller listed in “Programs and Features”.
  6. I did uninstall Reader 9 successfully. And installed Reader X back.
  7. All process is done.

Note: I didn’t try using “Microsoft Uninstaller Utility” with two reasons: Not available on Microsoft Website (means requires more time to find it), and Microsoft doesn’t recommend using it due many reported problems it might cause. And I tried not to use any 3rd software party if not need to.
